Why does this database matter?

Since 2010, the Orban government has consistently proclaimed a "freedom fight" against Brussels. Migration, Russian sanctions, rule of law, the EU budget — all areas where the gap between domestic communication and actual European Parliament voting regularly yawns wide.

This database chronologically documents the votes of Fidesz MEPs on the most important issues, and confronts them with what Viktor Orban and government media claimed at home about the same matters.

The essence of the double rhetoric: in the EP, Fidesz voted with the EPP group for years even on issues they presented at home as "Brussels dictates." After leaving the EPP in 2021 and joining Patriots for Europe in 2024, they shifted in the opposite direction — now openly voting for pro-Russian and anti-EU positions, which they cover at home with "peace advocacy."
